McNariy County
PEACEFUL, PROGESSIVE, & PROUD

Our History:

Selmer was named for Selma, Alabama, but was accidentally
misspelled in the process. McNairy County was named after John McNairy, a judge.

Buford Pusser served as the sheriff of McNairy County from 1964 to 1970, and since Selmer is the county seat, this was his   base of operations. The story of how he fought to cleanse the region of corruption has been dramatized by the "Walking Tall"   movies starring Joe Don Baker, Bo Svenson and The Rock. The original films were shot in nearby Henderson, Tennessee.

History buffs are delighted by Shiloh National Military Park, the site of the Civil War battle of Shiloh, and of course the Buford Pusser Home & Museum. Other popular attractions include the Cherry Mansion, Pickwick Plantation, Delta Queen and Riverfront Park.

Local Climate:
Average high temperatures climb as
high as 90 degrees around late July/early August, with average lows getting down to 28
degrees in January. Monthly precipitation averages 4.7 inches with about 3.6 inches of snowfall annually.

Area Amenities:
3 local public schools offer education to all grade levels from kindergarten through
the end of high school.

Higher education is provided by Jackson State Community College, Northeast Mississippi Community College and Union University, all of which are 40 miles or less away. There is also a specialized option in town called Styles and Profiles Beauty College.

Methodist Healthcare - McNairy Hospital serves the vicinity's medical needs.

Recreational Activities:
McNairy County is full of outdoor recreational opportunities. Located just 25 miles from Selmer, Pickwick Lake offers 496 miles of shoreline. The area has excellent fishing, 5 golf courses and numerous outdoor activities. The nearby Aqua Yacht Harbor is the second largest inland marina in the country, providing easy access to the Tombigbee Waterway. If boating or sailing is your passion, Pickwick Lake has water access to the Mississippi River and the Gulf of Mexico via the Tombigbee Waterway.

Pickwick Landing State Park was first opened in August 1972. Today it stands as one of the most visited parks in the state system. It contains an inn, cabins, marina, picnic shelters and more.

History buffs are delighted by Shiloh National Military Park, the site of the Civil War battle of Shiloh, and of course the Buford Pusser Home & Museum. Other popular attractions include the Cherry Mansion, Pickwick Plantation, Delta Queen and Riverfront Park.
Selmer Golf and Country Club is a 9-hole course that encompasses a wide variety of terrain. Hills and flatlands combine to form this challenging, fun course.
