McNariy County
PEACEFUL, PROGESSIVE, & PROUD
Our History:
Selmer was named for Selma, Alabama, but was accidentally misspelled in the process.
McNairy County was named after John McNairy, a judge.

Buford Pusser served as the sheriff of McNairy County from 1964 to 1970, and since Selmer is the county seat, this was his base of operations. The story of how he fought to cleanse the region of corruption has been dramatized by the "Walking Tall" movies starring Joe Don Baker, Bo Svenson and The Rock. The original films were shot in nearby Henderson, Tennessee.
History buffs are delighted by Shiloh National Military Park, the site of the Civil War battle of Shiloh, and of course the Buford Pusser Home & Museum. Other popular attractions include the Cherry Mansion, Pickwick Plantation, Delta Queen and Riverfront Park.
